CalOPPA: California Online Privacy Protection Act

Strict adherence to CalOPPA CalOPPA came into law in 2004 and covers operators of commercial websites that collect personal data. The law set a precedent as it requires website operators to post a privacy policy on their website stating exactly the information being collected and with whom it is being shared, as well as how it is being used and what for. The law’s reach has now stretched well beyond the Californian borders and is followed by nearly all countries around the world. Because we want to establish a trusting relationship with our users, we agree to include the following clauses to our privacy policy:

• How personal data are collected
• With whom (third-parties) we share personal data
• How users can control personal data we hold about them and request changes
• How users can send opt-out request
• The effective date of our legal agreement

Prior to participating in one of our programs, we may ask you to provide us with some of your personal information when filling out the non-binding estimate to further help you. How do we protect your information?

The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act (CFAA) makes it a crime to access and subsequently share protected information. In practice, any advice has by now come under the jurisdiction of the law due to the inter-state nature of most internet communication. To maintain the safety of your personal information, all information you may provide us with will be stored in a secure system with strict access controls. Only a limited number of persons have special access rights, and are required to keep information confidential. However, please keep in mind that no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee its absolute security. We do not provide your information to any other companies, unless they are trusted third-parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release information when it’s release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our website policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property or safety. Once you have been accepted as a participant in one of our programs, we will not ask for your credit card information. We use three different methods of payment:

• International bank transfer
• Domestic bank transfer (within Japan)
• Flywire

Meiji Academy strictly adheres to “The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing” act of 2003. The CAN-SPAM act is a law that establishes the rules for commercial email, gives recipients the right to have a business stop emailing them, and outlines the penalties for violations. Because just like you we hate spam, our mailing practice strictly conforms to the CAN-SPAM Act. However, if you willingly provide us with your contact information, we will send notices from time to time. We collect your email address in order to:

• Answer inquiries and questions
• Keep you informed of the progress of your application
• Ask for further information related to our service

In compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act, you can:

• Send a request to opt-out from our mailing list (honored within 10 business days)
• Clearly identify the sender
• Identify the physical address of our business

Your rights

You have rights regarding the personal data we hold about you. These includes:

• Access: you have the right to know what information we hold about you, and how we are using it.
• Amendment: You have the right to get the personal data we hold about you amended if you believe that it is inaccurate.

Children’s privacy

In compliance with the requirements of COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act), we want to put parents in control, and do not collect any information from anyone under 13 years of age. Our services are all directed to people who are at least 14 years old or older to protect children’s privacy and safety online. If you think that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected personal data from children without verification of parental consent, we take steps to remove that information from our servers.
