WHAT IS BILDUNGSKARENZ?

Bildungskarenz is a paid educational leave by the Austrian government. All Austrian employees are entitled to an educational paid leave for a qualified educational course anywhere in the world for a period of at least 2 months to 1 year. During your Bildungskarenz you will receive full financial support (known as “Weiterbildungsgeld”) from the Arbeitsmarktservice (AMS) including health and accident insurance. In addition, Bildungskarenz or Bildungsteilzeit won’t impose any additional financial expenses for your employer. Bildungskarenz is considered a very lucrative investment for both, employers and employees, to develop a superior workforce with enhanced business, linguistic, and intercultural communication skills giving them a competitive advantage on a global level.

Requirements for Bildungskarenz

  1. Minimum six months of continuous employment with the same employer (three months for seasonal workers).
  2. Mutual agreement between employer and employee (“Vereinbarung über Bildungskarenz”).
  3. Proof of participation in a fully qualified Bildungskarenz educational institution with at least 20 hours per week.

We will provide you with

  1. Acceptance letter (“Zulassungsbescheid” or “Kursanmeldebestätigung”)
  2. Detailed course of study (“Studienverlauf”)
  3. Timetable (“Stundenplan”)
  4. Additional documents in correspondence with the study program, health insurance, and Bildungskarenz, if required.
  5. Official School Graduation Certificate after successful completion of the course (“Schulzertifikat”)

Main Course Outline

Curso estándar

20 lessons / week

The primary focus of your studies will be placed on our award-winning Japanese Core Course which consists of the following items:

  • Two Grammar Lessons per day
  • Two Language Skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) Lessons per day

The 50% Japanese grammar and 50% applied language skills approach focuses on a communicative Japanese learning experience, which will equip you with the relevant linguistic toolkit to master day-to-day interactions with Japanese speakers.

1ST MONTH

You will get a proper understanding of the full range of Japan’s Business language known as “Keigo” and also actively engage in various business roleplays, e.g., business card exchange, bowing culture, unspoken rules, and Japan’s unique corporate philosophy.

2ND MONTH

6-7 lessons / week

Learning another language is also immersing yourself in another culture. Take advantage of the various cultural activities and field excursions we offer to gain a deeper understanding of Japan’s beautiful culture.

3RD MONTH ONWARDS

Japonés conversacional

4 lessons / week

Challenge your Japanese communication skills on different topics in a group chat setting with Japanese Native speakers.

  • Different chat topics for each group lesson
  • Strong emphasis on free speech and formulating an opinion
  • Phrases and dialogues will be provided as guidance
  • Topic-related vocabulary will apply

Bildungskarenz Course Goals

This course aims to give Austrian students a global outlook and a crucial understanding of the complexity of doing business in Japan and the Far East. You will acquire a solid understanding of the Japanese language required in daily conversation settings paired with Japan’s corporate philosophy teachings and cultural immersion through experiencing all facets of Japan’s traditional crafts and culture. At the end of this course you will be able to demonstrate an enhanced comprehension of the following areas:

Bildungskarenz / Bildungsteilzeit FAQ

Who is eligible for Bildungskarenz?

All Austrian employees who have continuously worked for the same employer for at least six months can apply for Bildungskarenz.

When can I start my Bildungskarenz at the earliest?

Assuming you have worked for at least six consecutive months at your current company, you will be eligible from the seventh month to start your Bildungskarenz.

Where and when can I start applying for Bildungskarenz / Bildungsteilzeit?

First, you should get approval from your employer. Second, apply for our program at least 3 months before your desired start date in Japan and prepare all necessary documents for the AMS in advance. You can only apply at your local AMS up to 1 month before your expected course start date at Meijin Academy.

What documents do I need to apply for Bildungskarenz / Bildungsteilzeit?

You will need the following documents

  • Filled out “Antragsformular zur Bildungskarenz” from AMS
  • “Sozialversicherungskarte”
  • Registration Form “Meldezettel”
  • Mutual agreement between employer and employee (“Vereinbarung über Bildungskarenz”)
  • Acceptance Letter from Meiji Academy (“Zulassungsbescheid” or “Kursanmeldebestätigung”)

Can I extend my Bildungskarenz once my course has already started?

Yes, you can. However, you have to meet two conditions

  1. Currently, you have not exceeded the total length of 1 year Bildungskarenz
  2. Your employer agrees to your request to extend the Bildungskarenz.

Can I change or remove current parts of my Bildungskarenz Package?

Unfortunately not. Our Bildungskarenz Package has been carefully tailored and customized in accordance with the Austrian Government to meet all conditions necessary for approval. However, you are more than welcome to add other modules or private lessons to your existing Bildungskarenz Package.

Is Bildungskarenz / Bildungsteilzeit recognized in all Austrian states?

Yes, Meiji Academy’s Bildungskarenz Program is fully qualified throughout the Republic of Austria.

What is my expected financial support for the educational leave in Japan?

It depends on your current salary and also the region you are residing in Austria. Please get directly in touch with your local AMS office to request further information.

What happens if I have to cancel my program due to personal circumstances?

We understand that unforeseen things can occur, hence our refund policy is trying to address all students' concerns fair and equally. Due to the special nature of customized academic packages and seasonal programs, we have specified the points in detail in our Terms & Conditions
